This sucks…
After the Wings got knocked out by the Oilers, I turned my focus to cheering on the Pistons. Well, tonight their playoff run finished in an similar fashion (but two rounds later in the Conference finals). Both series ended with a 4-2 series defeat. And point guard Dwayne Wade played amazing even with the flu, some comparisons were drawn to Michael Jordan’s Finals performance with the flu. Want more Pistons postgame reactions? I’m not trying to draw comparisons or extract differences between the teams. I’m just bummed that each team was ranked #1 in the league by record margins (historically) and still couldn’t even make it to their respective finals. Very frustrating. Both teams were beaten by good teams, not trying to detract from our opponents’ victories.
Wings:
Game #1 - Win
Game #2 - Loss
Game #3 - Loss
Game #4 - Win
Game #5 - Loss
Game #6 - Loss
Pistons:
Game #1 - Loss
Game #2 - Win
Game #3 - Loss
Game #4 - Loss
Game #5 - Win
Game #6 - Loss
So now I have no interest in the NBA finals and will pick a team to cheer for in the NHL finals. So who should it be? The Oilers or the Hurricanes? I’m still kinda bitter about the Oilers beating us. Some say I should cheer for them because then at least Detroit lost to the champs, but that won’t really make me feel any better. Both Anaheim and Calgary defeated us and went on to make it to the finals only to lose the series in Game 7. It’ll be interesting to see if this “trend” continues or becomes mere coincidence.
The Hurricanes have some ex-Wings and a U of M alum plus the owner (a rival of Ilitch’s) owns an OHL team 5 minutes from my house, the Plymouth Whalers. I like going to Whalers games so why not support his other hockey team? Plus, the Canes have 2 former Whalers on the team (Justin Williams and Chad LaRose) while the Oilers only have 1 former Whaler (Todd Harvey). Additionally, the Canes just signed a deal with Justin Peters, one of the Whalers’ goaltenders for this past season. And finally, a University of Michigan defenseman (Jack Johnson) will probably be playing for the Canes in a couple years. All signs point to cheering for the Canes and pretty much none for the Oilers. So go Canes!
