Enjoying the finals

I missed the last round or so of NHL playoff action because I was watching my Pistons in the NBA tourney, but they’re out so I’m back to hockey. I missed the first half of tonight’s game due to a meeting, but I am so enjoying the second half of tonight’s game! I don’t have the gut wrenching feelings I did the last time I watched the Oilers play and derail my Wings dreams. I can actually enjoy the series with nothing to gain/lose. Although, I’d gladly take that feeling to be at the Joe watching the Wings play right about now…wishful thinking on my part.

I turned on the TV, it’s 3-0 and the Oilers are up. With 10 minutes left in the game, it’s 4-3 and the Canes are leading! Plus, former Wing Ray Whitney scored two of the four goals. I’ve always liked him although he wasn’t the best fit with the Wings. I’m glad to see him succeed with another team. In Kukla’s Korner challenge, I picked Whitney to score the series clenching goal.

The fourth goal came on a breakaway while the Hurricanes were shorthanded - impressive! Cam Ward has been fantastic and really kept the team in the game. Oh my word! I can’t believe Ward just made that save on Horcoff - that was absolutely amazing!

Blast that Hemsky and his tying the game up. They showed the Rexall crowd before the goal and it looked so quiet. That’s not the case anymore!

Uh oh, Roloson seems to be struggling to put weight on his right side of his body. Boy that really sucks for Edmonton. I would not want any harm to come to Rollie, he’s played pretty well this postseason and if the Oilers were to win, I’d want Rollie to be playing between the pipes. Good luck to his replacement, Ty Conklin, who has to prevent the Canes from getting the lead.

90 seconds left in the third, come on Canes! I’m getting a feeling that slightly resembles the playoff rush. I love that feeling.

Wooo! There was a big mess up behind the net and the Canes captain, Rod Brind’Amour, was there to tap it in in a wraparound method to get goal #5 with 30 seconds left in the game. And the Canes win Game #1 - woohoo! Mmk, I have to get up really early so I can get to Cincinnati for my 10:30 one month post-op appointment. I probably won’t be able to post at all tomorrow so I’ll see ya on Wednesday!

Alanah at VCOE had some humorous observations in her non-liveblogging post that seemed an awful lot like a slightly delayed liveblog.

9:00 - Oh GOD that was fun!! Williams scores, for Carolina, terrorizes Roli stick side! I feel like celebrating. Go Canes! (Honestly, I DO find it more fun cheering for Carolina. Sometimes it pisses me off that Edmonton is going to win this series.)

6:20? - Hemsky, Hemsky, Hemsky. Those freaking European supporters will be making SUCH a fuss about this guy now. (*Sigh*) And here I just thought he was lucky. (Not really. That was a pretty goal, actually.)

3:50 - I just noticed that Conklin was in the game. I also just noticed that the score was tied. It’s possible that I’m really not very good at liveblogging. (Good thing this isn’t actually liveblogging, huh?)

Update: Apparently, Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish announced in a press conference following the game, “He [Roloson] will not be back in this series.” Man that sucks. It sucks for Roloson who worked so hard to get to the finals only to have his knee blow out. It sucks because knees suck [and I can say that from personal experience]. It sucks for the Oilers because they now have to rely on a backup and one that Oilers bloggers do not have much faith in. And it sucks for the Canes because if they win, the excuse will be Roloson’s knee injury. Poor Rollie.
