“Major announcement” at 1pm
The Detroit Red Wings have called a press conference at 1pm for a “major announcement.” So what could this be?
1) Steve Yzerman announcing his retirement (why would they hold a conference just to say he’d return next year?)
2) A major trade announcement, but usually that leaks out somewhere
3) A big signing (which would probably be a goalie and that scares me because I don’t like any of them available by free agency)
Unless it’s Option #2 or Option #3 (for a forward or defenseman), I don’t think I’m going to like this announcement. Please let it not be Option #1, yet I think that is what it’s going to be and it saddens me so. If it is Option #1, could they also be announcing who the new captain is (cough-Lidstrom-cough) or will they hold off on that for awhile?
GM Ken Holland did not return any phone calls last night.
Update: Sportsnet.ca has heard that The Captain will retire.
After 22 seasons, Detroit Red Wings’ captain Steve Yzerman is calling it a career, Sportsnet has learned.The Red Wings have called a press conference for 1 pm ET on Monday where the announcement is expected to be made official.
