Shanny, Hasek, and Belfour Updates
As I posted yesterday evening, Ed Belfour is in town today for a physical with Wings doctors to see how his back is healing up after surgery this past spring. Ansar Khan at MLive.com is reporting that the Wings could get him for slightly higher than the league minimum:
It’s prompted them to explore the possibility of signing a veteran like Belfour, if he’s healthy and would agree to a deal for about $500,000, slightly more than the NHL’s minimum salary, according to a league source.
The same article says that the Wings have contacted Hasek’s agent for some preliminary talk.
I don’t know which one is the worse of the two evils. The only positive is that we would get a goalie for pretty cheap, but that’s about it…
Apparently, the Wings have offered Brendan Shanahan a one year contract worth $4 million. That’s a pretty nice raise over the $2.28 million salary of last season. And why do we have to offer him this amount? This expensive salary that he has not earned because his playoff performances have been subpar! Because our UFA options are dwindling at a rapid rate and Holland believes that if we lose Shanny, we don’t have a lot of choices. Now that was just speculation on my part - I don’t know what Holland thinks. He’s currently in LA meeting with the Kings. Montreal and St. Louis are also interested in him.
Every day that passes, I try to remember the joys of the 2001 summer offseason when we landed some nice players. Silly salary cap…
