Fan rebukes Carolina jerseys on statue
Davis Jones, a resident of Raleigh, North Carolina, was given a citation for pulling down Carolina Hurricane jerseys on the Union Square monuments. The 49 year old fan refuses to apologize and “rebuked the North Carolina Historical Commission for not being more upset when state monuments were garbed in Carolina Hurricanes jerseys.”
And no, this isn’t some random resident who doesn’t like hockey. He actually is a fan!
“Do you think Andrew Jackson, sitting majestically on his horse while wearing a Hurricanes jersey was awe-inspiring and thought-provoking?” Davis Jones told the commission. “No, it was a distraction and derailed the purpose of the monument to both educate and honor.”
“I considered it not only a responsibility, but a duty to go down there and take those jerseys off.”
The chairman of the North Carolina Historical Commission, Jerry Cashion, said that he will not allow the statues to be decorated again.
“I share the outrage over the desecration of the monuments,” he said.
Hurricanes spokesman Howard Sadel said the team would probably not put jerseys on the statues in the future.
Personally, I love seeing the Spirit of Detroit statue in either a giant Wings or Pistons jersey during their playoff runs. I don’t see how adding a jersey to a statue is really disrespectful. I mean, if anything, it garners more attention to the statue.

If David Jones is a fan, then I’m the King of Siam.

Haha. I read that and said “you’ve got to be kidding me. This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard of.” The Hurricanes dropped the charges - I saw charge the evil man. Geez. Lighten up - you won the Cup!

Yeah, we won the Cup and all that…but deep down, I *really* kind of wished that the Canes would press charges against the idiot (who *is* not a fan…what a load of bullcrap).
The jerseys *really* added to the atmosphere in 2002, and seeing the pictures of them this year before the “incident” warmed this ex-Raleighite’s heart. The only other thing I can say about that guy is what a killjoy of a jerk…

I would’ve definitely pressed charges had I been the Hurricanes organization, the jerseys weren’t damaging the statues and the team had permission…
