Detroit in top 5 sport cities

The Sporting News released their top sport cities for 2006. Detroit ranked number four overall, falling one spot from last year’s rankings. Detroit includes Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti in their eyes.

How do they decide?

regular-season won-lost records (from the most recently completed season);

playoff berths, bowl appearances and tournament bids;

championships;

applicable power ratings;

quality of competition;

overall fan fervor as measured in part by attendance as percentage of venue capacity;

abundance of teams, though we reward quality over quantity;

stadium/arena quality;

ticket availability and prices;

franchise ownership;

marquee appeal of athletes

Based on the regular season performances thus far: the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings had the best regular season records. The Tigers aren’t doing too shabby so far into their current season. The Lions sucked it up, no surprise there. Michigan made it to a bowl game, but wasn’t as successful as anticipated (and lost to Notre Dame AND OSU). The Detroit Shock have the third best record so far this summer, second best in their conference.

Putting the postseason aside (which of course is the most important part), Detroit had a darn good sports year.

Don’t forget that Detroit hosted the Super Bowl this year and the MLB All-Stars game last summer.
