Will the Wings make the playoffs?

Heck yes.

Recently, some members of the media are predicting a drastic drop in the standings by the Detroit Red Wings this season. Some predict the team not winning the Central. Some think that they’ll qualify for the playoffs, but be at the bottom of the standings among the 8 teams. Others have even said they wouldn’t be surprised if the team didn’t make the playoffs.

Personally, it would take some tragic accident involving Hasek, Osgood, Hank and/or Datsyuk, and Lidstrom to make us fall that drastically down the Western Conference standings. I think the Wings will win the Central Division with the Nashville Predators coming in a close second. I don’t think we’ll take the President’s Trophy, which is fine by me, but we’ll easily make the playoffs.

IwoCPO at Abel to Yzerman is making a bet with himself because he’s so confident about the Wings qualifying for the playoffs.

I’ll tell you what…the Wings miss the postseason and I’ll sing an ode to Denver to the tune of Looking Glass’ timeless classic, “Brandy” and put it here on A2Y.

James Mirtle agrees with IwoCPO and I about this…

The team went on to win the President’s Trophy as the league’s best team, and heading into this year, they really haven’t lost enough pieces to foresee much of a step back. Sure, Brendan Shanahan, Steve Yzerman and Manny Legace are gone, but a full year with players like Niklas Kronwall and Danny Markov on the blueline and Dominik Hasek in goal should be more than enough to replace those losses.

More importantly than all of these this, however, is the fact that the Central Division still looks as soft as Jan Hrdina, and there’s no one aside of the Nashville Predators — who have questions to face of their own — who can even challenge Detroit.
