Michigan 3, Butler 1
I went to the Michigan’s men’s soccer game Friday night against Butler University where they won, 3-1. This weekend is the second annual Michigan Invitational with MSU, Butler, and Virginia Commonwealth. There were 1,233 fans at the game last night cheering on the Wolverines. You may not think I’m a big soccer fan, but both of my younger brothers have played select or premiere soccer since they were 10 and I’ve been watching them play since they were 4.
Anyways, I like to go to the games because I “know” a couple of players. Sophomore Steve Bonnell graduated from my class at Detroit Country Day and he notched two assists last night. My brother played alongside Steve helping DCDS win the state title in 2004. In his senior year of high school, he was runner up for Mr. Soccer awarded to the top soccer player in the state of Michigan. His current U of M teammate, Jake Stacy, was named Mr. Soccer and scored two goals (one of which Bonnell assisted on). One of my brother’s other teammates from his premiere team made the Michigan team as a walk-on and while he didn’t play, I was still pretty excited for him.
In the second half of the game, Butler registered only one shot. Yikes. Michigan plays their next game in the invitational Sunday at 2:30pm. Go Blue!
