Tigers 10, Wings 5
FSN Detroit played the charity softball game pitting the Detroit Tigers alum against the current Detrioit Red Wings. The game actually took place this past Saturday, but FSN had a decent tape delay and tonight was the first (and possibly only) showing of the game. I must say that it was an incredibly entertaining hour and a half broadcast between the wit from the likes of Chris Chelios, watching hockey players run around in baseball uniforms, and observing Canadians and Swedes trying to play some softball.
Here are some highlights / quotes from Saturday’s game…
- “I’ve got a bunch of Swedes on my team who’ve never played ball before…I have to make sure they go to first base and not second.” [Ted Lindsay]
- Kris Draper designed the line-up.
- “Robert Lang has no chance of hitting or catching any ball tonight.” [Chris Chelios]
- Andreas Lilja hits with only one hand on the bat because he’s not so good with both hands.
- Zetterberg scored a home run on his first at bat.
- Chelios has to be the worst softball pitcher. Ever.
- When Cheli went up to bat for the first time, “I’m going to try to hit a home run, at least.”
- Lang missed two pretty easy catches in a row…oops!
- “Who’s the backup pitcher for you?” [Ken Daniels] “I don’t know, but I want to get out of here.” [Chelios]
- “Never played this game before…definitely a new perspective. Hopefully take some innings out and chew some gum.” [Lang]
- Malts started pitching in the third inning to relieve Cheli. Cleary and Crain also pitched later in the game.
- Maltby steals home to make it 5-2 in favor of the Tigers alum.
- Johan Franzen wearing #93 as Hasek will be #39 this season.
- Datsyuk misses a fairly easy catch and looks hilarious in a baseball uniform.
- Cheli gets run number three for the Wings.
- Mickey Redmond sings “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” - yikes!
- Mo Cheese dances and looks to be in mid-season form. Now that’s the kind of job I’d want.
- Schneider scores the fifth and final run for the Wings after Crain bunts the ball.
- As he hits a foul ball, Cheli yells “Oh No!”
- One fan held up a “Chelios for President” sign. Now that’s a scary thought.
- Draper got the most Tigers alum out and definitely earned the most impressive outfield performance from the Wings team.
- Tigers alum, Jack Morris, is the game MVP.
