Wings 1, Canucks 3
The Detroit Red Wings opened the 2006-2007 season against the Vancouver Canucks at Joe Louis Arena. Update with links to game recaps / blog posts / newspaper articles at the bottom of this post…
First Period
- 1st Wings penalty came from an awful goaltender interference call on Mikael Samuelsson. He was so cross checked into Roberto Luongo. Cheap call by the referees.
- Tonight was Kirk Maltby’s 800th game.
- Red Berenson came to the Joe earlier today to see former U of M player Brendan Morrison, a current Canuck. Speaking of U of M hockey, their season opener is tomorrow night against Waterloo.
- Hasek has made some pretty nice saves so far but every time he touches the puck, I cringe with worry about that groin of his. There has been some miscommunication between Hasek and the new Wings defenseman Danny Markov.
- Luongo made a brilliant save on Hank with 14 seconds left in the power play and 1:06 left in the first.
- Samuelsson went to the box for his second penalty of the period (this time for interference).
- Markus Naslund scores with 4.7 seconds left in the period on a pretty “flukey goal” (how Lidstrom described it during intermission).
- The Wings have re-vamped their dressing room.
- Lidstrom described the pre-game ‘ceremony’ announcing him as the new captain as a “little bit emotional.”

Second Period
- Trevor Linden scores on the rebound. I laugh as I hear Shania Twain singing “That Don’t Impress Me Much” over the Joe Louis speakers 2:25 into the second period.
- Did you know? Vancouver and Boston are the only two teams without a Stanley Cup ring on their roster.
- Sammy Salo scores on the power play (Lidstrom’s penalty). He was wide open with plenty of time to make his wrist shot count with 14:15 left in the second.
- With 4:05 left in the period, Henrik Zetterberg took a shot from a really weird angle and it bounced in! First Wings goal of the regular season!
- Did you know? The Red Wings were never shut out last year.
- Did you know? Johan Franzen’s girlfriend, Cecil, cuts Hank’s hair.
- Our power play unit has looked like nothing special through forty minutes of play.
- Hank during Intermission: “I’m real proud [to wear the “A”]…I think we haven’t really tried him [Roberto Luongo] that much.”

Third Period
- To be honest, I had a meeting from 9-11pm and missed the entire third. I did record the game, but I’m exhausted after staying up late last night writing a detailed outline for my paper. So I’ll watch the rest of it sometime tomorrow. I’d watch the rest of it now, but I know that there weren’t anymore goals so…yeah.

HireaFan.com
After seeing a link to HireaFan.com on Kukla’s Korner, I registered to see if I could make some money watching Wings games. I was able to “work” the season opener. I’m supposed to take a photograph of myself watching the game and then write a brief summary of the game. Here’s the photo I sent of me in my dorm room:

Once they receive my summary and photo (within 12 hours of the game), I’m supposed to get $5 in my PayPal account. Not too shabby considering I would’ve watched the game anyways.
Be sure to read…
- VCOE’s reaction and Zanstrom’s thoughts about last night’s game coming from the Canucks’ perspective. The Vancouver Sun also has their recap of the game up as well.
- When your Free Press article is titled “Stevie, Come Back!” it doesn’t really instill a lot of confidence in your team or local newspaper. It was one game. Sure special teams didn’t play well and Hasek didn’t look amazing, but hey the season *just* started.
- The Detroit News’ game recap article has a better title, “Canucks spoil the party”.
- As I mentioned last night before the game started, Nicklas Lidstrom was named captain of the Wings. Both newspapers had articles on that honor as well.
- As George at Snapshots dutily noted, there were a surprising amount of empty seats for the season opener. Hopefully, that was because of the Tigers’ playoff game but nothing more.
- And I can’t forget to link to the NHL.com recap as well as the offensive scoresheet.
- One last thing, congrats to Shanny for scoring 2 goals including one breakaway and notching his 600th goal on his opening night on Broadway. I’ll be cheering for the Rangers in the Eastern Conference (mainly because of Shanny and Lundqvist).

Woa, look at that shrine on your wall. Cool.
“Did you know? Vancouver and Boston are the only two teams without a Stanley Cup ring on their roster.”
Holy heck! I didn’t know that at all. Cool, but alarming stat.

It’s too bad you didn’t get your picture taken at the end of the game
Did you know? The Red Wings have started the season 0-1.

Zanstrom- If you think the shrine on my dorm room wall is impressive, you should see my room at home. Dorm = lots of posters. House = lots of signed photos and memorabilia. It really is beautiful.
And you learn a lot of random trivia from Mickey and Ken, our play-by-play & color commentary guys at Fox Sports Detroit.
Temujin- Yeah, I wouldn’t have been smiling so much.

More than his groin, I’m worried about #39’s inability to close his arm on Salo’s goal from directly in front of him and his propensity to chuck his stick around the crease. But it’s no matter, Luongo played very well last night… not a lot of teams get enough pucks by him to win.
