Brett Hull retirement ceremony tonight
When the Detroit Red Wings take on the St. Louis Blues tonight in St. Louis, they will be honoring Brett Hull’s career as his jersey number is retired and raised to the rafters of Savvis Center.
Yes, I’m a big Brett Hull fan. Yes, he can be a pain in the butt. Yes, he always speaks his mind, but that’s what I love about him. I read his autobiography a few years ago, entertaining read. Don’t agree with everything the guy says but he can score. And he can talk. Players like him just spice up the game.
What players/staff are saying about Hull…
Dominik Hasek: “He was a little bit lazy, I have to admit it; he was a little bit overweight, we knew it. However, he had so much talent. His wrist shot was by far the best in the world — quick release, he knew exactly where he was shooting. Nobody before and I think nobody after will have the same shot he did.”
Nicklas Lidstrom: “We had a great team that year, and he was a big part of it. He was fun to play with, he always had something to say on the ice. He could bring a smile to everyone’s face.”
Mathieu Schneider: “The ultimate goal scorer. He probably had the quickest release ever. He always would say, ‘If you see me with my stick, I’m open,’ and it wasn’t far from the truth.”
Mike Babcock: “Good genetics, and he made the most of his talent. Everyone talks about his offense, but he was a flat-out smart player.”
Kris Draper: “Hullie was a guy that as soon as he thought it, it came out. He always had something to say — a lot of the times it was constructive, and there are a lot of times it certainly wasn’t. But you knew something was coming out of him.”
My favorite Brett Hull quotes…
- Brett, do you catch flak for listing crossword puzzles as a hobby?†-Dan Patrick / “What Dan? Do I catch flak because I AM SO MUCH SMARTER than everybody else?â€
- I didn’t like the ’50s, you know. I appreciate Elvis, but I’m not a big fan. I’m not a rockabilly fan. And the ’60s and early ’70s were, to me, the greatest times to live.
- I’m not done yet making people miserable. If they’re going to make me miserable, then I’m going to make them miserable.
- If you’re going to play hockey now, you have to be able to play. If you have the ability to fight and play, you’re an unbelievable commodity. But if you can only fight, there might be six of those guys left in the league, and I can guarantee they’re going fast.
- Sometimes guys need to cry. Some hockey players think they’re too tough to cry.
- That’s what infuriates me about the game: the fact that… scoring… is the one thing I love to do, and it’s almost like you are not allowed to do it anymore.
- There are so many unbelievable words… But that doesn’t mean I have a favorite word.
- They should not be allowed to put your picture on a hockey card without your approval of the picture.
- I’m not dumb enough to be a goalie.
