No change in NHL schedule
Much to my dismay (see the post below- my English paper on the disparities of the NHL schedule), the NHL schedule will not be changed. Dave Shoaltz of the Globe and Mail reports that the league came awfully close to reducing the divisional games from 8 per season to 6, which is what I support.
The governors fell one vote short of the required two-thirds majority on a motion to drop two of the eight games against teams in the same division and add home-and-home games against teams in the opposite conference. When only 19 of the 30 governors voted in favour of the move, the NHL decided to maintain the status quo.
But some of those in attendance believe the issue will be revisited in mid-January when the governors meet at the NHL all-star game in Dallas. Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson, a strong proponent for the change, is hopeful the move could come as early as next season.
“I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it,” Ferguson said after the two-day meetings wrapped up Tuesday. “There was a great deal of sentiment, a great deal of discussion, and while the required votes didn’t land on any one particular schedule matrix, the prevailing sentiment was that change was good.
