2 employees stabbed at Cheli’s Chili
Earlier this morning, two employees were found stabbed to death inside Cheli’s Chili in downtown Detroit. It is believed that they were killed while preparing to open the restaurant/bar for the day.
“We believe based upon the information right now that a former disgruntled employee may be responsible,” she said. “Preliminary, it appears it happened this morning.”
Police were called to the restaurant this morning and an officer found the two victims. Police conducted a sweep of the building to ensure there were no others.
The Detroit Free Press has reaction from Maltby and Holland:
Wings spokesman Mike Brinich said the team had no comment at this time.
“For me to comment right now … I don’t know any details,†team general manager Ken Holland said. “I just got here and I just heard secondhand that something happened at Chelios’ bar.â€
“Whatever happened it’s awful,†forward Kirk Maltby. “What do you say? … We just heard this morning, probably like anyone else. You feel very bad for the families and the people that are involved and their lives. Hopefully, whoever did it comes to justice.â€
Update: The owner of the restaurant/bar, Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, issued this statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at our establishment this morning. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims — they were wonderful employees and were part of our family,” the Red Wings defenseman said in a statement today.
“We are cooperating fully with the Detroit Police Department in their investigation and are hopeful the perpetrator will be brought to justice in quick order. We appreciate the community’s support at this difficult time.”
Update #2: One of the two victims has been identified:
Family members identifed one of the victims as Megan Soroka, 49, of Dearborn. The other victim had not been identified.
Soroka’s family members said she was a manager and worked for several years at the Chris Chelios establishments in Dearborn and Detroit. She and her husband, Christopher, were friends with Chelios.
“It’s an active investigation … We’re trying to put together the pieces right now,” Bully-Cummings said.
She said the victims were not found on the main floor of the three-story building, but she did not say where they were specifically.
Police were questioning other employees who were at the restaurant at the time of the killings.
Not only does Chelios have to deal with this, but apparently ESPN thinks he is out of a job with the Red Wings as well. This is the headline I saw on my Bloglines:

I saw the same ESPN headline in Bloglines as well — I nearly went and checked the Red Wings roster right there.
It’s sad to hear this, it must have been some disgruntled employee…
