Thank You

I’d like to personally thank everyone who has visited my website over the past 24 hours. Today, the number of visitors has doubled the highest amount who have visited my blog on one day. So thanks to everyone who has commented, sent me an email, or linked to Behind the Jersey, I really appreciate it. It certainly made it worth staying up until 6am working on BtJ before finally getting some sleep today.

I will be making a post sometime tonight with links/quotes from a variety of newspapers, but I need to catch up on sleep and then I’m going to the Scotty Bowman autograph signing so it won’t be until much later!

Here is a list of websites linking to my ceremony recap post…

Paul of Kukla’s Korner at NHL.com

I had pre-arranged with Christy, a fellow blogger, to take some pictures of the Yzerman ceremony, so I could share them with you. Boy, did she go above and beyond the call of duty. Not only some great pictures taken by her and her Dad, Michael Hammond, but a fantastic recap of the whole night. A must read for hockey fans.

Bill at Abel to Yzerman

Why? Because I’m a hockey blogger and all I could think about was how bad Christy at Behind the Jersey was going to kick my ass on this one. Oh, and she did. No one covers Yzerman like Christy. And you just knew she’d pull out all the stops on this one. Premium seats at the Joe. Video coverage. Minute-by-minute description of events. Don Cherry chance meetings. Still coverage. It’s almost unfair, and I’m more than a little bitter today.

How bitter? This bitter. I’m not even going to link to her. I won’t give her the satisfaction. Just the opposite. I refuse to direct my 13 readers to BTJ because, well, because I’m a little frigging baby who wishes he could have been there instead of watching it in a sports bar with the sound turned down and a 53-year old woman falling asleep in her 55-ounce Redskin beer mug elbowing me in the ribs every time she reached into her purse for a Camel.

So there. I hope you enjoyed the festivities Christy. Dammit.

Head over to Behind the Jersey, because a UM sophomore, 20 years old and “only a blogger”, kicked your candy asses.

Christy from Behind The Jersey thoroughly documented Steve Yzerman night at the Joe. Check out her summary and her kick-ass photos.

James Mirtle

Christy Hammond from Behind the Jersey was at the Yzerman retirement ceremony and presents an extensive photo gallery of the night’s activities.

Matt On the Wings

Christy’s coverage of the jersey retirement ceremony is better than anything I could produce so I’ll just say a few things rather than do a comprehensive write-up.

Ritch at American Hockey Fan

For the best coverage of the night, go see Christy’s photos (she took the one I have there) over at Behind The Jersey. Honorable mention goes to Abel to Yzerman, who I didn’t even know was back (I’ve been a little AWOL for the past month) , who writes with tremendous eloquence about not only Yzerman, but the pain that all hockey fans feel when something HUGE happens in the world of hockey and the sports media ignores it. Oh, and he hipped me to Christy’s great coverage too. She was all over this night, and she even got Don Cherry’s autograph, which I must admit I’m a little pissed off about.

I mean, you don’t get to have lower bowl seats to Steve Yzerman’s retirement game AND get Don Cherry’s autograph on the same day. It’s just too much joy. It’s like hearing that you’ll get a chance to drink from the Stanley Cup, and when you get there, the liquid they’re pouring into it is Johnny Walker Blue. I mean, for fuck’s sake Christy, even if we keep it within the realm of the NHL, let’s do a little comparison:

Christy: Hanging out at Stevie Y night and getting Don Cherry’s autograph

Phil Kessel: At home with ball cancer.

See what I’m saying here?

Spread it around, doll.

Kevin at BFLOBlog

For coverage from a blogger who was there, you can go read Christy at Behind the Jersey.

Dave at Gorilla Crouch

Christy over at Behind the Jersey has by far the most extensive coverage of the ceremony last night. Click this link right now and read her recap.

Eric at Off Wing Opinion

Christy Hammond was at the Joe Louis Arena last night for all of the Yzerman-related festivities. Being a good blogger, she took along her camera too.

Earl Sleek at Battle of California

p.s. Everyone’s probably read it already, but Christy at BTJ has some awesome stuff from the Stevie Y. retirement night. Hey, say what you will about the Red Wing winning machine, but at least they leave your spleen alone (exception: employees of Chris Chelios).

Great job Christy! You have doomed the “mainstream” Detroit media to their rightful insignificance with your comprehensive coverage of Yzerman’s retirement night.

No problem. I’m glad I found out about your coverage and was able to link to it — quality posts deserve a lot of readers.

    Christy -

There was no way that I would even write about Yzerman in any blog preview, post, article, column, knowing that you would do the honors, and extremely well.

Know that I wanted to because he’s one of the few legends in the game where I will say to anyone that speaks about him, “Yeah, I saw him play live when…”, but he is not on my team and there is someone out there that will truly tell the story.

There are very few players that embody the true nature of the game like Steve Yzerman, and you captured everything incredibly well.

    Nicely done.

Doomsberry- Haha. Thanks for the compliment!

James- Thanks again for the link.

PB- Thank you very much for your kind words. It was just an honor for me to be there last night.

Your blog is an absolute treat. As a Habs fan used to seeing things done in a classy manner, I’ve gotten the next to nearest of front row seats to Yzerman night via this site. The class of the Red Wings organization couldn’t hope for a better outlet to be seen from than Behind The Jersey.

Your dedication to your blog is both inspiring and intimidating - hopefully the heart of it gets cloned across the NHL.

Now can’t the Red Wings and Canadiens play in the same division like the good old days?

  6. Christy Hammond Says:

Reality Check- I’m glad you liked my recap and I appreciate your compliments! It’d be wonderful to have an Original 6 division, or at least the opportunity to play once a season…
