Wings lose badly to Sharks

The San Jose Sharks always seem to find a way to beat the Wings, badly. In front of an U of M alumni crowd (or at least section), the Detroit Red Wings took a 3-0 lead in the first period scoring all these goals on 12 shots on Evgeni Nabokov. A constant trip to the penalty box and Vesa Toskala in net gave the Sharks plenty of chances to catch up.

Helene St. James:

But the Sharks are one of the best teams in the NHL for a reason, and Thursday night they schooled the Red Wings.

Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News called it an utter embarassment.

The Sharks scored six power play goals on nine power play opportunities. Allowing that many PPG was actually a franchise record for the Wings, but definitely not one you want to earn.

What amazed me was that Babcock didn’t pull Dominik Hasek after the fifth goal or even at the end of the second period. I couldn’t believe when the third period started back up that he was still in net.

“I have no explanation for that,” said Hasek of the Wings’ collapse. “I don’t know what to say. I don’t have any words for it. They outplayed us, but still, you give up nine goals, that’s a lot for a game. We played very bad.”

It was certainly not a pretty game to watch. At least we play the LA Kings on Saturday, hopefully we’ll be able to bounce back then.

Maybe in recent history, but as a long time Sharks fan, I do remember horrible losses of 11-1, 10-3, 7-1 (in the playoffs), 6-0, etc. In the early years, no team could make the Sharks look as foolish as the Wings did. Also a sweep in 1995 that went 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. More like Roger Federer beating up somebody at Wimbledon than hockey scores.

I thought it was over after the first period. The Sharks have a habit of blowing a team out one night and then playing horribly the next. Had to feel a little sorry for Hasek though. Even after the 8th goal, he did not want to come out.
