THN’s 100 Most Powerful People

The Hockey News’ latest issue features 100 People of Power and Influence in hockey.

#38 - Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland, he was ranked the highest for any current Detroit Red Wings player or staff member. THN had him at #44 last year.

Holland’s decision to bring back Dominik Hasek was jeered in some circles, but it’s paying off. Some thought the Red Wings would fade in the salary cap era, but Holland, 51, has done a great job. His challenge is to re-sign Pavel Datsyuk, an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Chris Chelios came in at #39. Last year, he was ranked #54.

“Chelios, 44, defies logic. Most men his age are battling the bulge, but Chelios is a fitness fanatic who shows few signs of slowing down. His suit against NHLPA boss Ted Saskin over the way he became union head will be fascinating to watch, given the stakes when it goes to trial.

#66 - Mathieu Schneider was not ranked last year.

The veteran defenseman is having a superb autumn of his career. But more to the point is the fact Schneider, 37, is among the dissident players’ voices challenging Saskin’s reign as the NHLPA’s top guy. Schneider won’t hesitate to raise a little hell on and off the ice.
