Wings 4, Avalanche 3 (SO)
The Red Wings finally won on their west coast road trip and it came against an opponent we used to know (and hate) very well. I was unable to watch the game as my cable at U of M does not carry the Versus channel.
Here’s what the newspapers are saying…
Apparently, Dominik Hasek has owned the Avs of late. This win marked his sixth straight victory over the Avs.
Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, and Robert Lang scored all three goals for the Wings during regulation.
Robert Lang tied the score 3-3 at 5:12 of the third period with a power-play goal, his 11th.
Lang one-timed a shot past goalie Peter Budaj after a pass from Mikael Samuelsson, beating Budaj before the goalie could go post-to-post.
Lang’s goal silenced the Pepsi Center crowd after the Avalanche had just taken their first lead.
Neither team scored in overtime sending this game to the shootout. The Wings finally won their first shootout of the season (they had lost three prior shootouts this season) with a nice deke by Zetterberg.
Zetterberg used a reach-back backhand to secure a 4-3 shootout victory over Colorado at Pepsi Center. It’s the same move Peter Forsberg used to win Sweden the 1994 Olympic gold medal, but as every good Swede knows, the move was invented by someone else.
“Actually,” Zetterberg said, “it’s Kent Nilsson. He was the first one who did it in a Swedish national game. I think a lot of guys do it now. … It’s something we do after practice when we fool around. When it works it looks nice, but when the goalie just stands there, you look kind of foolish. It was nice it worked.”
Zetterberg’s goal came after Datsyuk had deked to his forehand to score on goaltender Peter Budaj. Joe Sakic was the only Avs player to beat Dominik Hasek in the shootout. Before Tuesday, Colorado was 3-0 in shootouts, while Detroit was 0-3.
…
“I probably have to figure out another move next time,” he said. “I don’t think it will work anymore.”
The Wings take on the Coyotes in Phoenix on Thursday.

[…] … It was the Wings’ seventh win in a row over Colorado and Hasek’s sixth. … According to the Versus broadcast, Dominik Hasek refused to be pulled during the Sharks’ 9-4 drubbing of the Wings last Thursday. I hope not, because that’d mean they’re going to explode. … By the way, Nick Lidstrom is the team’s only All Star starter. …… Versus interviewed Steve Yzerman during the third period and he said he can see the Wings and Avs rekindling their rivalry, though he said it’d be much more likely to happen were they to meet in the playoffs. … Boxscore … Play-by-Play … Shift Chart … A2Y … […]
