Bertuzzi practices today

New acquisition Todd Bertuzzi practiced with his new teammates earlier today at the Joe.

The Detroit News has a nice gallery up with photos from today’s practice. Bertuzzi will be wearing #44. Personally, I think Bertuzzi looks good in the red and white.

Bruce MacLeod, writer for the Macomb Daily, wrote this in a post at the Red Wings Central forum.

They first interacted in the locker room before the practice. Chelios went up to Bertuzzi and asked him how he was feeling (back). The two were professional on the ice, nothing of note. Chelios commented after the practice that he read Bertuzzi’s line that he and Chelios wouldn’t be roommates (joking) and he thought it was funny. Chelios said that he doesn’t even remember Bertuzzi’s hit and he was being sincere. Then he joked that he’s been hit so often, he barely remembers anything.

I think Chelios summed it up by saying that some players worry about this stuff and others don’t. Chelios doesn’t give it a second thought. None of it is personal. He said that Martin Lapointe came up to him and seriously asked if the two of them were going to be friends when they were teammates. Chelios thought that was funny and told him of course. Chelios was in a great mood today.

Bertuzzi was swamped by media after the practice and just looked like he put his time in and was eager to leave.

The Detroit Free Press has some nice quotes from Bertuzzi about his first practice on a new team. Head coach Mike Babcock was surprised with how many of the drills Bertuzzi participated in.

“Feel great,” Bertuzzi said. “Haven’t skated in a few days. It’s nice to come in and get a good skate in and meet the guys.

“I’m excited. All the credit goes to the team right now, who put themselves in a very good spot. I’m hoping to come in and just help fill a different void and different look for the team.”

Bertuzzi said he can’t be too eager to try and rush himself into the lineup. “Hoping to be out there as soon as I can,” he said.

    Bertuzzi can’t stand being in the scrum, regardless of the situation.

    It sure is strange seeing him in a Red Wings uniform.
