Holmstrom out with an injury
Tomas Holmstrom will be out 2-3 games with an upper body injury. He apparently suffered it during Sunday’s game, but was able to keep playing in the game.
As IwoCPO at Abel to Yzerman reminds us, the Holmstrom injury is the most worrisome. Well, if Hasek’s injury is more serious than Babcock and the staff are letting on, I’d be more worried about that one. However, all the players aside from Kopecky should be back by the playoffs.
Myself? Homer’s got me frowning a bit. Obviously we can’t lose Zetterberg. Cleary and Samuelsson we need back as soon as possible and Bertuzzi…well, that’s kind of icing on a big volcano of a cake. But Homer’s the wild card, I believe. I have to think Zetterberg would be in there IF THE PLAYOFFS STARTED TODAY, but they don’t (despite the world-stopping importance of tonite’s matchup), same with Hasek. But any time Holmstrom has to sit, it worries me because he takes so much abuse that this must be fairly serious.
Due to this recent and rather unfortunate rash of injuries, the Red Wings will be relying on a lot of Griffins players (those who have been called up or just made the Wings time this year like Jiri Hudler). Fortunately, tonight’s opponent (the Nashville Predators) are also dealing with a lot of injuries including Peter Forsberg’s upper body injury.
Thanks to George at Snapshots for the link to the Macomb Daily article. Darryl Bootland was the most recent call-up from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Teams are limited to four callups between now and the playoffs, but the Red Wings are exempt from that in this case, listing Bootland as an emergency callup — a rule that can be used if you have fewer than 12 healthy forwards or six healthy defensemen.
Last year, Brett Lebda was able to play in the Griffins playoffs after the Wings were knocked off in the first round because Lebda was still on the Griffins’ playoff roster. However, forward Josh Langfeld was not named to the playoff roster because he’d have to clear waivers and thus can’t play for the Griffins if the Wings lose in the playoffs.
Valtteri Filppula, however, was put on the Griffins’ playoff roster. Although Langfeld has spent more time with the Griffins this season, there is one difference between he and Filppula — Langfeld would have to clear waivers to play for the Griffins.
Random Note
Former Red Wings player Jason Williams, who was recently traded to Chicago, is out with a broken left big toe after blocking a shot in Sunday’s game against the Ottawa Senators. He was able to finish that game on Sunday, but probably won’t play again until this upcoming Saturday when the swelling diminishes.
