Wings 1, Canucks 4

I’m guilty. I am a bad hockey blogger. I got off work at 10pm last night and by the time I got home, I was able to watch the last 10 minutes or so of the first period. I then watched the second period. I was so exhausted, I couldn’t even stay awake and watch the third period. What kind of Wings fan am I?

At least I have a legitimate excuse, I had 10 hours of sleep in the past two nights. Due to my crazy schedule (20+ hours of work this weekend and 4 exams this week to study for) and the fact that I fell asleep during the game, I have no game recap. Sorry guys!

Oh, Fox Sports Detroit will be showing the Nick Lidstrom Spotlight special at 10pm so be sure to watch or record it!

Random notes…

The Plymouth Whalers beat the Kitchener Rangers last night, 3-2. I looked for Wings’ prospect Jakub Kindl, but apparently he was a healthy scratch.

It was their last game in the regular season and they finished as the #2 team in the OHL. The London Knights won the regular season title by one victory. They had a winning percentage of 0.765 and the Whalers’ was 0.757%. Yep, it was that close.

The first round of the playoffs have been announced and the Whalers will take on Guelph Storm in a best of 7 series.

Sat., March 24 at Plymouth 7:05
Sun., March 25 at Guelph 6:30
Tues., March 27 at Plymouth 7:05
Thurs., March 29 at Guelph 7:00
Sat., March 31 at Plymouth 7:05 *
Sun., April 1 at Guelph 6:30 *
Tues., April 3 at Plymouth 7:05 *

The Whalers played Guelph four times this season and won the series, 3-0-1, with their only loss coming in the shootout.

What I’m about to say may be a bit biased because, well, I’m an intern for the Whalers, but OHL hockey is a lot of fun to watch and we’re a fantastic team so I am hoping and expecting great things in these playoffs games. Unlike in the NHL, the Whalers ticket prices will actually remain the same as the regular season prices so for one seat, it’ll cost you either $10 or $14!

Jack Johnson

Last night, the Michigan Wolverines lost to the Fighting Irish (Notre Dame) in the CCHA Championship. Two of my fellow Whalers’ co-workers had made blue shirts with JMFJ on the front. The two Js stand for Jack Johnson and you can guess what the MF stands for. Anyways, one of my co-workers (a U of M alum) is family friends with the Johnsons and his dad wore a JMFJ shirt while he did his game dance during intermission (think a Mo Cheese type dance for you Wings fans). My co-workers then wore the shirts before the start of the Whalers game because the Rangers’ Steve Downie was on the team. The team was not so pleased to see those shirts to say the least. They changed into Whalers’ shirts by game time. Downie does not like JJ after an incident in last year’s World Junior Championship.

For any LA Kings fans, there is a hilarious forum thread at Lets Go Kings message board with JMFJ comments. It’s a funny read especially with the very creative photoshop images.

I can also tell you that most of the U of M team has seen this YouTube clip:

The question should be, can Johnson find a Michigan b-ball coach?

Good one Paul. It’ll be interesting to see who Bill Martin picks.
