Wings attend Opening Day
I had a chance to watch an inning and a half of the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day yesterday in between classes and I happened to catch John Keating interviewing Kris Draper, who brought his daughter Ella to her first season opener. The Detroit Free Press also published a short article about Kris Draper taking his five year old son Kienan to his first Opening Day and that some of the Wings watched the game from a suite.
“Kienan and I are going to head down to the ballgame together,” Kris Draper said after morning practice at Joe Louis Arena. “First time that the two of us are going to go watch Opening Day. It’s pretty neat. He’s bringing both our ball gloves down. I said, ‘You gotta bring your baseball glove,’ and he kind of told me the same thing. He’s been to games before, but he’s never been to Opening Day.”
About 20 minutes later, Kienan walked into the locker room wearing his baseball glove. It was a cute scene, one that made Wings coach Mike Babcock pause and smile while he spoke to reporters.
Earlier that day in the practice, all the Red Wings players received a small present:
After practice, the Wings walked into their locker room and discovered that new Tigers caps had been placed on a stool at each of their stalls. Some players, like forward Johan Franzen, tried on their caps before they even took off their uniforms.
Unfortunately, the Tigers lost, 5-3, in the 10th inning.
