Whalers 3, Rangers 2
The Plymouth Whalers won Game #2 of the second round of the playoffs against the Kitchener Rangers, 3-2, in Kitchener last night. The Rangers tried to claw their way back in after being down 3-0 during the game, but the Whalers and goaltender Michal Neuvirth were able to hang on. Neuvirth was the first star of the game and made 45 of the 47 shots against him. Plymouth now has a 2-0 series lead. The Whalers play next on Tuesday at 7:05pm in Plymouth. Go Whalers!
The Columbus Blue Jackets also have signed Jared Boll to a three year entry level contract. CBJ signed his teammate, Tom Sestito, three weeks ago or so. Sestito will most likely be playing in Syracuse to start next year, but I’m unsure of where Boll will be playing.
Boll, 20, was Columbus’ fourth pick, 101st overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft. In 2006-07, he tallied 28 goals and 27 assists for 55 points with 198 penalty minutes and a +23 plus/minus rating in 66 games with Plymouth. He led the Whalers and ranked fourth in the OHL in penalty minutes and was fourth on the club in goals. In four playoff games, he has notched 1-1-2 and 14 penalty minutes.
The 6-3, 195-pound native of Crystal Lake, Illinois has registered 47-49-96, 403 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of +16 in 131 career OHL games. Prior to joining Plymouth, he played two seasons with Lincoln of the United States Hockey League. He collected 29-32-61 and 470 penalty minutes in 116 USHL games from 2003-05.
So far, Sestito, Boll, James Neal, and Daniel Ryder are the four Whalers who have already signed with their NHL teams.
