Memorial/Charity Donations
Most of you have heard by now of the great tragedy that took place at Virginia Tech on Monday morning. My heart breaks for all the familes and friends affected by this horrific event. If you are interested in donating money to the victims’ families and helping the school deal with grief counseling, memorials, etc., please be sure to donate it through a credible source. Unfortunately after 9/11 some random people set up donation collections to make a profit (sick, I know) and I would want any donations to go to the appropriate organizations.
Virginia Tech has created a Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, which you can view on the school’s website.
On a related note (concerning donations), University of Michigan’s Relay for Life took place this past weekend and we raised over $267,000 for the American Cancer Society!! I want to sincerely thank a couple of BTJ readers who made donations to the UM Relay for Life and wanted to share a couple pictures of the event.
My walking shift (well I crutched for two hours) was from 12-2am on Saturday night so these photos let you see the lit up luminaria. I made four of them, three for my grandparents (2 beat cancer and one is currently fighting bladder cancer) and the last one for a high school friend who is currently in remission.

Sorry for all those bright white dots in the second photo, but what you see there is snow.

as a reader/Wings (and Caps) fan in Virginia, for whom these events have hit particularly close to home, i wanted to thank you for both your comments. i still can’t completely process everything, but there has been an indescribable sense of isolation from being surrounded by this event. it really does help to know that people in the rest of the world are living through this with the VT/Blacksburg/Virginia community. thank you for taking the time in your own forum to share that.
and, as ever, go Wings.
