Bernie makes the papers
As I mentioned in a previous post, a group of Wings fans from LGW raised money to buy the team 25 t-shirts featuring Bernie the Rally Bird along with motivational notes for each player (I did Draper and Kronwall). Today, I’m taking a sign to the game that mentions Bernie and I’m hoping to get a reaction out of Draper during warmups. I’ve never made a sign before so we’ll see how that goes…
Anyways, this gift to the players has made it into both the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News. Yesterday, this blip was seen in the print and online version at the Free Press:
The fan Web site LetsGoWings.com has produced a T-shirt with a photo of the bird that settled onto the ice in Game 1 at Joe Louis Arena. The fan site sent a package of 25 shirts customized for each Wings player to the Joe as a token of appreciation.
“We noticed the picture of the bird (also seen during FSN’s Game 1 telecast), and wanted to do something with it for the team,” said site member Dmitriy Sinitsin.
Thanks to some creative Photoshop enhancements, the little bird in the photo — named Bernie — is standing on the blue line with a stick, No. 0 jersey and helmet.
Sinitsin, a Russia native who now lives in Minnesota but is not a Wild fan (”Um … no, never,” he said), said the shirts can be purchased by fans through the Web site www.cafepress.com/bernierally. Prices for a variety of shirts and sweatshirts range from $10.99 to $27.99 each.
Today, you can find a brief mention in an article by John Niyo in the Detroit News:
The Wings players were greeted with homemade signs from their kids when they arrived in the visitors’ locker room at Calgary’s Saddledome this week. When they get to the rink this morning, they’ll be greeted by a little birdie.
A group of Wings fans chipped in $300 and sent a package of 25 custom-made t-shirts featuring “Bernie the Bird” — dubbed the “official rally bird” of the 2007 playoff drive — along with some motivational notes for each player to Joe Louis Arena on Friday. The shirts feature a photo-shopped version of the bird that made an on-ice appearance during Game 1 — TV cameras highlighted his playoff debut — and the slogan “Little Wings, Big Heart.” If you’d like to order your own rally apparel, check out the fans’ website at cafepress.com/bernierally
