Lebda injured

Okay, Brett Lebda was injured during his hip check of Langkow and then Langkow’s consequent suckerpunch into Lebda’s face. The question remains “just how serious is it?” Concussion? Knee injury or ankle injury?

Update: John Niyo wrote his his Detroit News weblog that Lebda “had to be helped off the ice, didn’t return to the game, and left the arena on crutches, but i saw him walking normally on his way to the training room before that.” End of Update

Well, it sounds like it’s a concussion or at least that’s what they’re going to spin it as to try to get that suspension. Since he has had a concussion recently, I think he probably got another one. Ansar Khan @ MLive.com blogged about the game (good read, check it out) and he says that Lebda does have a concussion.

First was Daymond Langkow’s sucker-punch on Brett Lebda with 8:35 left in the third period. Lebda has a concussion. He missed three games late in the season with a concussion after a hit from behind by the Blues’ Ville Nieminen. It was a stupid move by Langkow, who the Flames can’t afford to lose for Game 6. All Lebda did was upend him with a low hip check, possibly worthy of a penalty, not a punch.

According to the Detroit News, Lebda left the arena on crutches.

Calgary’s Daymond Langkow took issue with a low-bridge hip check Brett Lebda delivered midway through the third, sucker-punching the Wings defenseman while both players were down on the ice. Langkow wasn’t called for a penalty, but Lebda was sent off for clipping.

Lebda, who crashed awkwardly feet-first into the boards on the initial hit, headed to the dressing room rather than serving the penalty and didn’t return to the game. Lebda left the arena on crutches – he also may have suffered a concussion — and his status for Game 6 was unclear.

I think it’s safe to say Lebda won’t be playing tomorrow.

I like to think of myself as a semi-expert concerning knee injuries due to my own 9 knee surgeries. It doesn’t look good.

He went feet first into the boards and it looked like his leg twisted awkwardly. I think it’s a knee injury, but it could be ankle. Lebda was helped off the ice and did not put any weight whatsoever on that leg. If it was just a concussion, he would have needed help getting off the ice, but he could’ve put some weight on both legs. From my seat, I could see players move up and down the hallway to the locker room. Lebda still needed assistance getting down that hallway.

If he receives a concussion, he’ll be out tomorrow at least I’d think. If he injures his leg, it obviously depends on the severity. With Kronwall out with a broken sacrum, the Wings do not need Lebda out of the lineup as well. I think Lebda has been playing well and it’d suck to have to call up someone from the Griffins when we’re hopefully going into the next round of the playoffs.

Hopefully, I’m all wrong and he’ll be good to go tomorrow, but it certainly does not seem that way.
