I lost. Sherry wins.

I’ve been participating in a playoff bracket with a bunch of other fellow bloggers. Rebecca @ A View from the Cheap Seats organized it all and has been tallying points throughout the first two rounds. The winner of each round (the one with the most points) gets to pick three bloggers he/she would like to write about the winner’s favorite team. Sherry @ Scarlett Ice won after the second round (I came in fourth) and I was one of the bloggers she selected. So here is my post about the good that is the Ottawa Senators:

Due in part to the fact that my beloved Red Wings are in the Western Conference, I find it hard to root for any other team in the West. That means the Canucks, Flames, and Oilers are the enemy. Due to the Original 6 and the history of the Wings, I don’t like Toronto or Montreal. The one Canadian team I don’t really have any problems with? Ottawa.

After choking last year in the playoffs (which the Wings did as well), the Senators have stepped it up this postseason and are just one win away from the Stanley Cup Finals. I wish the Wings were that close. Anyways, they have a terrific top line with Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson, and Jason Spezza that has been lighting it up. I’m a Heatley fan and was happy to see him do so well in the regular season.

And instead of an old goaltender that the Wings have (aka the Skeletor), the Senators have what seems to be a fun younger goaltender. Just look at this TSN clip about Ray Emery’s clothing choices and then another clip with his fight with Marty Biron (which he won) and then Andrew Peters (which he lost, but was still smiling during the fight). Wings’ fans tend to have a soft spot for goalies who fight (think Vernon and Ozzie vs. Roy).

Much to Jes Golbez’s dismay, I like Swedish hockey players. The Wings have seven of them on the team. It would be cool to see a Wings-Sens match up in the Finals with both team captains as Swedish players. Most fans would agree that Alfredsson (or Alfie) has really stepped it up this year as team captain.

Alfie tries to distract himself in the hours leading up to the game and likes to watch Dancing with the Stars.

“I find these the toughest hours leading up to the game of a game day, trying to relax and, you know, trying to think of anything else but the game,” Alfredsson said yesterday morning. “But it’s hard. It’s not until you get to the arena at night that you feel comfortable, that you have your routine.”

So in the hours before a game, he tries to avoid television, radio and newspapers, and when he watches television, as he did on Tuesday night, it’s often something that you’d never think a hockey player would watch. Wait’ll Don Cherry hears this:

“I watched Dancing with the Stars,” said Alfredsson. “I probably would never do that (usually), but anything to get my mind off the game.”

And if Lidstrom won’t be able to lift the Cup over his head at the end of the Wings’ playoff run, why not have Alfie do so and torture the souls of Toronto fans? Sounds good to me.

Assuming the Sens do get through to the final to face either the Anaheim Ducks or Detroit Red Wings, the 34-year-old Alfredsson will be their leading candidate for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Imagine if that were to happen. Alfredsson, the only player in the entire NHL the Leaf Nation insists on booing every time he touches the puck, winning the trophy named after the founder of Maple Leaf Gardens.

Delicious.

And that is the conclusion to my post. Hopefully, it won’t come back to bite me if the two teams meet in the Finals.
