NHL is planning another outdoor game

ESPN is reporting that the NHL is working on scheduling another outdoor hockey game for this upcoming season. The last outdoor game was held in 2003 between the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens in front of almost 60,000 very cold fans. Before the game, a “legends tilt” was played with stars like Messier, Lafleur, and Gretzky.

Supposedly, at least one team would be an American team and that would be fantastic. Based on television ratings, I would suspect that the American team would be either the Sabres, Wings, or Rangers. I know that MSU and UM played in their own outdoor hockey game in Lansing in front of thousands of fans as well a few years ago and it was seen as quite a success. Despite the cold, I’d love to attend an outdoor NHL game. It would be a terrific and unique experience to partake in.

According to league sources, the NHL is planning another outdoor game for the 2007-08 regular season. The date, site and clubs involved were not disclosed.

The sources did indicate the game will likely include at least one American-based team and it will be televised in the U.S. by NBC as part of its regular-season schedule.

The clubs and venue will be determined by stadium availability and logistics, as well as market size (for television purposes).

NHL spokesman Frank Brown had no comment.
