Wings hope to re-sign Schneider
According to Ansar Khan @ MLive.com and Booth Newspapers, the Detroit Red Wings are a little closer to re-signing veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider. And by a little closer, I mean GM Ken Holland and Schneider’s agent have talked this week.
Aside from re-signing goaltender Dominik Hasek, Holland’s biggest concern this summer should be re-signing Schneider. Why? To be honest, Schneider is the best veteran defenseman available that suits Detroit’s style of play. Personally, I think Holland will be able to sign Schneider to another contract, but it’s obviously just a matter of at what price. While I don’t expect Schneider to take a discount for the good of the team, I just hope he doesn’t try to break the bank.
Defenseman Danny Markov has told Holland that he would like to play for the Wings next season. Unfortunately, Holland won’t be able to offer him a contract until he figures out what is going to happen with Hasek and Schneider. It all depends on how much money he spends on those two. If he can afford to re-sign Markov as well, it sounds like Holland will do so. Otherwise, Holland will have to go after a very affordable veteran defenseman or just call up a player from Grand Rapids (who has plenty of solid defensive talent).
The Wings appear to be making progress in contract talks with defenseman Mathieu Schneider. General manger Ken Holland said Friday that he spoke with Schneider’s agent, Mike Gillis, earlier this week and will talk to him again next week.
The club has made it a priority to re-sign Schneider, who’s coming off two of the best seasons of his career. And Schneider has said several times that Detroit has been the best stop in his career. So it looks like they’ll find a way to get a deal done.
…
They’ll likely sign a low-priced veteran free agent this summer for added depth. Kyle Quincey could be the seventh guy, or he might shuttle back and forth from Grand Rapids as needed. And they have a good stable of young D men in Derek Meech, Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl.
