UM medical plane crashes

I usually don’t mention any news items here at BTJ, but this one hit close to home. Last night, Michigan viewers missed the first five minutes of the second period due to a breaking news conference regarding a crash of a UM medical plane.

Yesterday, two UM surgeons and two transplant specialists headed to Wisconson to bring back to Michigan two lungs for a patient desperately needing those two lungs to survive. Five minutes after take-off, the two pilots on board signaled an emergency and tried to head back to Milwaukee. The plane crashed before they reached land.

6 people died in the crash. The patient needing the double lung transplant was in critical condition yesterday and probably won’t make it much longer without the needed double lung transplant. One of the surgeons is a pediatric cardiacthoracic surgeon in training so there is some speculation that the patient is a child.

I don’t personally know any of those on board, but I helped start an organization on the UM campus called Students for Organ Donation. Our group’s advisor, Dr. Jeffrey Punch, is the chief of transplant surgery at UM and he obviously worked close with all four of the UM staff on board.

My prayers go out for family, friends, and co-workers of all six of those individuals on board.
