Hasek has made his decision

Goaltender Dominik Hasek has made his decision regarding the future of his career according to agent Rich Winter. His decision has not been made public as he needs to talk to the Wings’ front office first.

Winter, who was decidedly upbeat in discussing Hasek’s plans, hinted that the 42-year-old is coming back.

Winter said he expected an announcement in the next day or two.

Hasek’s decision will have a significant impact on the two days of meetings general manager Ken Holland is holding this week with Detroit’s pro scouting staff to go over the team’s off-season moves.

“I have about six decisions to make by August that will determine our future next season,” Holland said.

“I need a goalie, three defenceman and two forwards. I’d like to take care of three or four of them by July 1 or even the draft, so I can sniff out some trade possibilities.”

The article also reports that Holland is close to re-signing with veteran defenseman Chris Chelios (not a surprise there). Like I’ve mentioned before, Holland will try to re-sign defenseman Mathieu Schneider first and his salary figure will determine if the Wings attempt to re-sign defenseman Danny Markov. If they don’t have the money to bring Markov back, the article reports Kyle Quincey is believed to earn a spot on the roster.

Holland had a lengthy talk with Schneider’s agent last week.

“Everything now is about money and how to spend it,” Holland said. “We’ve got some to spend, but not enough if everyone wants a big raise.” …

“Mathieu has told me how much he wants to stay here, so I think he’s open to some compromise,” Holland said. “I don’t know what they’re thinking because we haven’t exchanged any numbers yet.

“But, on the open market, he might get an offer of $5.25 million and that’s when our interest in a player becomes less.”

Update: Ansar Khan doesn’t have much to add to this discussion until the announcement is made, but he believes Hasek will return for another year. He does not believe the Wings will re-sign Danny Markov because there isn’t a lot of room under the cap and the team wants to give a cheap roster spot to a younger player like Kyle Quincey or Derek Meech.

Hasek’s agent, Ritch Winter, said on Monday that his client has decided on his future. Winter, however, wouldn’t reveal the decision, saying he needed to speak with Wings general manager Ken Holland, who was tied up in organizational meetings. All indications are that Hasek has decided to return for another season. The Wings want him back and expect him to return, so at this point it would be a major curveball if he decided otherwise.

Hasek will certainly get a raise from the $750,000 base salary he earned last season. Just how much more he’ll get is what Holland and Winter are likely discussing this week.

Haha I think I was happier not knowing when he’d decide than knowing that he had, but we don’t get to hear it yet! Sounds positive though :)

Haha. Based on what I’ve read, I’m pretty sure Hasek will come back next year. But it still is making me a bit nervous since they haven’t announced it yet!
