2007 NHL mock drafts
The Wings currently have pick #27 in the first round and no selections in the second. Here are the selections made for the Wings in various mock drafts…
27. Red Wings Nick Ross 6-1, 195 D Regina/WHL
GP: 70, G: 7, A: 24, Pts: 31At first glance you do not see a great skater or shot from the point, high-end puck skills or intimidating size, but what you get is a competitor with good hockey sense. He is one of those defenseman who makes smart decisions with or without the puck and is the glue of your blueline since he is so dependable. He makes good passes out of his zone and sets up his forwards to make a rush while remaining poise under duress. Manages to be at the right place at the right time and uses good body position and angles well to stay on the right side of the puck. Shows a gritty side as he willingly blocks shots and takes hits but he can deliver crushing checks due to his good timing as well. Can contribute on both specialty teams and could develop into a solid No. 4 defenseman.
27 D Thomas Hickey Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) 5-10/182 18
Hickey reminds some observers of Tom Preissing (a smaller version). Like the Ottawa blueliner, Hickey builds his game around his above-average skating and his ability to move the puck effectively. He’ll likely top out as a second-pair guy who can contribute on the power play.
TSN:
27. TOMMY CROSS
D, Westminster (High-CT)
TSN Rank: #26
HT: 6.03 WT: 195
25 GP, 8 G, 12 A, 20 Pts
McGuire Says: Because the Red Wings have Chelios, Lidstrom and Schnieder, they look down the road and know they need to find some young defencemen. This young man from Boston College will really help Detroit. My source at Boston College says he’s one of the best they’ve had there in a long time.
Hockey’s Future Mock Draft Result: Brandon Sutter, C/LW Calgary Hitmen (WHL). If he falls all the way to the 27th place then it would be a wise decision to select the 6′3 centerman who also can play on the wing. Sutter is a solid skater who has good hockey sense and solid hands. His work ethic and attitude are required on a team that wants to win. He also has grit and some offensive upside. If he’s not available, Red Wings could go with Grand Rapids native Patrick White. He also has solid size, but he offers more offensive upside at the cost of the defensive play.
DETROIT RED WINGS 27 Joakim Andersson (Frolunda) C
Big centerman is an excellent playmaker with a physical side that Red Wings fans will appreciate.
ESPN.com’s mock draft left out the Wings in the first round giving the 27th pick to the Senators.
Aside from those players on the Whalers, I don’t have much to say about quality of prospects so I won’t even go there. Since the Wings don’t have a pick in the second round this year, we could see them trade away their first pick and get two second round picks to draft more players. Obviously if the team sees a player they really want, they’ll keep the first round pick.
