Shanahan re-signs with Rangers

The New York Rangers have re-signed former Red Wings’ forward Brendan Shanahan to a one year deal, which could be worth up to $5.3 million if he earns all of his incentive bonuses.

He will receive US$2.5 million in base salary and can earn an additional $2.8 million in performance-related bonuses. Shanahan will earn $2 million if he plays more than 10 games next season and has a chance to earn up to $800,000 in playoff-related incentives, a source told The Canadian Press.

The 38-year-old left winger had 29 goals and 62 points with the Rangers last season, his first with New York. Following the Rangers’ second-round playoff elimination, Shanahan said he wanted to continue his career and had no interest in playing anywhere but New York.

”There was never any doubt what Brendan’s intentions were or on (general manager) Glen Sather’s part that he wanted Brendan back,” Shanahan’s agent, Rick Curran told The Associated Press in a phone interview. ”We never called anyone, never had any intention of doing anything other than putting all our efforts into New York.”

This contract makes the Rangers even closer to the $50.3 million salary cap maximum and the team still has to sign RFA goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and forward Sean Avery. As of right now, both of those players will be heading to arbitration if a deal is not reached beforehand.
