Wings fans in Phoenix to pay more

Thanks to a link from George @ Snapshots, I was able to find news that the Phoenix Coyotes organization will once again raise ticket prices for their home games against the Detroit Red Wings. As much as it sucks for Wings fans in Phoenix to pay more when your team comes to town, the ticket prices have been reduced from last year’s raise if that’s any consolation.

When the Detroit Red Wings come to town on Saturday, Oct. 20 and Saturday, Dec. 29, single game tickets will range from $23 to $138. This represents a 20% to 37% price reduction as compared to the single game ticket prices for the Red Wings games last season. There are also two separate seven-game mini plans that each include a Red Wings game priced at the regular single game ticket prices along with six other great NHL games this season including the Opening Night game against the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 4. Seven game packages start at only $90 ($13 per ticket).

Ha! I live in Phoenix and attended both Red Wings games last year (and the year before that, and the year before that, etc…). All the higher ticket prices did last year was reduce the number of casual Coyotes fans coming to the games. There were an awful lot of empty seats at the arena last year whereas in previous years the Red Wings games would always be sold out.

So pick your poison ‘Yotes…empty seats or higher ticket prices for your most popular game.

Thanks Carl for your comment! If I was running the Coyotes, I would want to get a full house as much as possible to really get the energy in the building going, but that’s just me.

    Hiya -

It’s a double edged sword really. If the tickets were cheaper, the marketing folk most likely think that the Red Wing fans will buy them up and the ratio of Red Wings fans to Coyotes fans become even more disparate.

In addition, Red Wings games are offered as a “seventh” or an “extra” game in partial ticket packages to fans who buy them. If there are any seats left, charging a high price would get more money for the team - I’m not saying I agree with it, but it could be a possibility.

No one was coming to games last year as the season was not going well. Plus, many bought tickets to the Arizona Cardinals that opened up the stadium next door, leaving many casual fans to choose.

What I didn’t like was seeing Red Wing fans throwing hats on the ice when their player scored a hat trick. I wouldn’t try that in the Joe…

    FWIW
