Wings to talk extension with Draper
The Detroit Red Wings’ GM Ken Holland plans to talk about a contract extension with Kris Draper’s agent later this week. Draper will be a 36 year old unrestricted free agent next summer, but he wants to remain in Detroit for the rest of his career so the two should come to an agreement pretty soon I’d think.
I think the biggest difference between the two sides will probably be length of contract. I’d guess that Draper would want two to three years and then he’d retire after this next contract. With the salary cap, Holland may want to limit a contract for one or two years. But that’s just speculation and I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Draper certainly has been playing like it is a contract year with five goals already this season. He leads the team in goals along with Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom.
“It’s fun, it’s nice to get off to a good start and contribute offensively, and be part of a winning team,” Draper said. “I’m just shooting the puck at the net and seeing what happens.
“It’s nice when it goes in and being able to contribute. It’s something everybody in this dressing room wants, to be able to contribute.”

That’s pretty good, considering he only scored four in 80 games in 1998-99.
I’m sure Draper feels some urgency to perform, not just because it’s a contract year, but also when he sees a kid like Darren Helm coming up, someone who’ll likely do the same job in Detroit for less money in the not-so-distant future.

Yeah, he’s definitely had a great start to the season.
And that definitely is a valid point about a player like Helm coming up.
I believe Drapes just wants to finish his career here and I’m sure he’s willing to take a lower salary to do so.
