Hockey doubleheader at Ford Field?

The Detroit News has an article today that reports there has been discussion, albeit brief, regarding Ford Field hosting a hockey doubleheader next winter. The doubleheader would feature a UM-MSU hockey game (Cold War II) and a Toronto Maple Leafs-Red Wings game. Anyone who likes hockey in the Detroit area has to think this is a fantastic idea. While the game wouldn’t be outside like the first Cold War between UM and MSU, this would be a great day of hockey and help Ford Field prepare for the Frozen Four tournament when it comes in 2010.

I think an outdoor Wings-Leafs game would be great at the Big House, but that’s just my personal bias talking here.

Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson and Michigan State coach Rick Comley confirmed a game was in the works for next December at Ford Field.

And, Comley said, it could be part of a doubleheader with a Maple Leafs-Red Wings game.

“We’ve had preliminary, and I have to emphasize extremely preliminary, discussions regarding the possibility of holding a game at Ford Field in the future,” said Jimmy Devellano, senior vice president and alternate governor for the Red Wings. “It’s been very, very light discussions.”

Two words for you: Do It.

I”m a Leaf Fan and shudder at the potential thrashing the Wings might lay on my boys, but what a great idea - DO IT!

Amazing. As a long time Leafs fan I can’t think of a matchup like this that I’d rather see us a part of. Here’s to hoping.

Why not play a quad header?
    OHL, NCAAM, NCAAW, NHL?

Pick the match ups for the day.

    OHL: Windsor, Plymouth, Sarnia, London,
NCAAM: UM, MSU, Wayne, Wisconsin, NMU, tOSU, NDumb
NCAAW: UM, MSU, Wayne, Wisconsin, BC, tOSU, NDumb
NHL: Wings vs (Leafs, Blackhawks, Habs, Rangers, Preds, Jackets)

Truth be told, Hockey Day in Detroit with that line up would line up VERY well with any Hockey Day in Canada the CBC can come up with.

I am all for that. If they did it like the Heritage Classic in Edmonton, they should air both games. That would be an instant classic.

I have the DVD copy of the Heritage Classic, and I can’t tell you how good the DVD is. The NHL needs to market this one the same way. Call it the Michigan Classic or something. :o)

I fear the only way Bettman will go for it is if we play either the Preds or the Blue Jackets.

Steph & Mark- I think it would just be a great matchup and it definitely would be a team that would help draw the 60,000+ that Ford Field can fit.

John R- While the idea sounds great, I think they are simply looking for a double header so they can practice for the Frozen Four.

Teebz- If I could change one thing, I’d wish both games would be played outside because Ford Field is a domed stadium. But I like the idea a lot too!

Doomsberry- I’m afraid if Bettman does get involved, you may be very right. He’ll find a way to screw it up.
