Lidstrom agrees to two-year extension
Veteran defenseman and team captain Nicklas Lidstrom has agreed to a two year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings. Despite possibly earning his sixth Norris Trophy this season, Lidstrom will be taking a slight pay cut for the next two years. He’s currently making $7.6 million. He will be making $7.45 million over the next two seasons.
“Nick has been the best defenseman in the world for several years,” general manager Ken Holland said in a statement. “He’s a great captain and role model who does everything right both on and off the ice. We’re proud to have him continue as a Red Wing for another two years.”
This was certainly a nice Christmas surprise for Wings fans. I think it’s safe to say none of us were surprised about an extension, but that it happened this early in the season and that it was a decrease in pay (albeit a small one) was a pleasant surprise.
“Kenny approached me during training camp to see if I was interested,” Lidstrom said. “I said I was. We’ve been talking, not a whole lot over the fall, but we sat down right before Christmas and we got a deal done.”

Hey Christy, I agree this is not a surprise that the Red Wings signed Nicklas Lidstrom to a contract extension. Given he’s had another great season (as has the team, obviously), it was only a matter of time this got done. I can certainly see him winning another Norris Trophy if he continues to play at his current pace.
I wrote my own blog entry late last night on Lidstrom’s signing, so feel free to check it out! I also have it on ArmchairGM.com right now, too.
Oh yeah, it’s pretty much a lock Lidstrom will be in Atlanta next month for the All-Star Game and I won’t be surprised if he starts. Then again, you may be thinking “Duh!”, LOL.

Paul- Thanks for the comment and mention of your post. I read it and you definitely did a thorough job covering the extension!
Yep, Lidstrom is leading the Western Conference in terms of votes for the All-Star so he is a lock.
