Game 1 (Sorta) Live Blog: Wings/Stars
Joe here. Unfortunately, the NHL did not consult with me about deciding to have Game 1 on a day when I made previous plans. Add to that the fact that the game is on Versus (which I don’t have at my house), and it looked like I was going to be in trouble.
But fear not. I will be live blogging the game via a TiVo at my office. What that means is that I’ll start the blog as soon as I can get here from the beginning, and will do my best to catch up as fast as possible.
Follow along after the jump.
So it’s 9:30 as I start the game. Let’s see how quickly I can do this.
20:00 - Start of Period 1: No surprises in the lineups.
19:19 - The lines: Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom, Franzen/Filppula/Samuelsson, Drake/Draper/Cleary, Hudler/Helm/Maltby, Lidstrom/Stuart, Kronwall/Rafalski, Lebda/Chelios.
18:49 - Penalty Detroit: Kronwall (Hooking). Didn’t quite see it. Though Dallas has been hot on the power play (25%)
18:44 - Fast shot by Modano. Osgood makes a good save.
17:43 - A neutral zone turnover by Dallas the Wings can’t convert.
17:18 - Rafalski deflects a Stars shot. They’ve been keeping it on Osgood for a decent portion of this power play.
16:49 - Penalty’s over.
16:36 - Kronwall was set up as he came out of the penalty box, but he couldn’t hold down the puck for a shot.
16:15 - Penalty Dallas: Norstrom (Hooking). Versus does a lousy job of showing replays on penalties, by the way.
15:41 - Penalty Dallas: Fistric (Roughing). Rafalski’s blueliner held by Turco. After the whistle, Fistric gets into some extracurriculars, and we’ve got an early 5-on-3.
15:31 - GOAL DETROIT: Rafalski (2) from Lidstrom and Holmstrom (PP). After a shot that goes off the post, it comes out to Brian, who puts it past a clueless Turco! 1-0 Detroit, and the power play goes on.
15:12 - The crowd is chanting “TUR-CO! TUR-CO!”
14:12 - Zetterberg tries to set up Holmstrom, but Turco smartly grabs the puck and holds it.
13:53 - Lidstrom with a blueliner that takes an odd bounce that surprises everyone on the ice.
13:27 - We hit the first TV time out. Detroit is taking it to the Stars, and I think the Stars have to figure this out quickly.
12:53 - Kronwall dumps the puck into the crease, but the invisible man there can’t get his hand on it.
12:08 - Penalty Detroit: Holmstrom (Interference). A collision is ruled interference. I don’t quite get it. 0/1 tonight for Dallas.
10:52 - Zetterberg passes it to a breaking away Lidstrom, who shoots it wide. Then Zetterberg breaks towards the net, gets a shoulder as he tries to get the shot off, but no call.
10:25 - Dallas has been unable to mount anything on this power play.
10:03 - The penalty expires as Osgood covers up a Stars shot for a stoppage.
9:43 - I should’ve noted this: Maltby is playing tonight. Darren McCarty is the scratch in his place.
9:00 - Richards makes a shot that Osgood knocks towards the glass.
7:45 - It’s back and forth. The shots are 6-4 Detroit. We’re overdue for the second TV time out.
6:47 - We finally get an icing that brings up the TV time out.
6:36 - Winchester and Locke slam into Stuart to the left of Osgood.
6:04 - Penalty Dallas: Petersen (Holding). Really, Versus, try showing a replay of the penalty. We might want to go see it or something. 1/2 on the power play for Detroit.
5:32 - A stick failure for Zetterberg blows a great chance from the blue line.
4:27 - GOAL DETROIT: Franzen (12) from Kronwall and Hudler (PP). From the blue line, Kronwall shoots it, it goes off Franzes who’s right in front of Turco. It’s 2-0, and a hot night for the power play!
3:40 - The crowd is really on Marty Turco tonight. We hit the final TV time out for the period.
3:06 - This looks like the last two games of the Avs series. It’s not that the Stars are playing badly, but that the Wings are totally dominating.
2:11 - Hagland had a wide-freaking-open net behind Osgood but couldn’t put it away! He’ll have nightmares about that.
1:30 - Penalty Dallas: Modano (Hooking). He tried to pull down Zetterberg. Another Wings power play: they’re only 2/3 tonight.
:41 - Holmstrom called for a hand pass after losing his stick. We get a faceoff. This hasn’t been a great power play for Detroit, but I think they’re due for one.
:08 - Zetterberg and Datsuyk both with great shots that Turco has to handle.
:00 - End of Period 1: 30 second of the power play roll over. It was a dominating first period for Detroit.
Due to the fact we’re running on a delay, I’ll move right into the next period sans stats.
20:00 - Start of Period 2: The Franzen goal makes it a 5-game scoring streak, which ties the Wings playoff record held by some guys named Howe and Lindsey.
19:30 - Back to 5-on-5.
18:42 - Datsuyk from 18 feet, and Turco swipes it away.
17:29 - Ed Olczyk was just asked what the longest playoff game he played was. Back-to-back double OT games.
17:08 - Emrick’s implying that it was an awfully quick turnaround for the Stars. Three days isn’t good enough for him?
16:03 - Datsuyk with a nice shot that Turco holds onto.
15:10 - Both teams are going end-to-end. The Wings seem to have let off the gas just a little bit here.
14:16 - Zetterburg with a wrap around that Turco has to stretch out with his stick and stop!
14:06 - And then Osgood with a great save and hold after Hagman is driving in hard! Two great saves back to back.
13:46 - Penalty Dallas: Ribeiro (Hooking). We get the first TV time out. And an ugly, dumb penalty as he gets his stick up at the waist of Holmstrom.
13:20 - GOAL DETROIT: Holmstrom (3) from Lidstrom and Zetterberg (PP). A play that featured Rafalski spinning on a dime to keep the puck in the zone winds up on Lidstrom’s stick, who puts it on net where Holmstrom tips it in. 3-0, nothing but power plays!
12:07 - Draper puts a hit on a Stars player. The Wings have applied the gas again.
11:08 - They just showed the overhead replay: Holmstrom was clearly in the blue on that deflection. Shouldn’t have counted.
10:38 - OUCH! Kronwall with a big open-ice hit on Bettinen. And he got his elbow up to boot.
9:38 - Penalty Detroit: Lidstrom (Hooking). After a Wing was pulled down, they get on a hook. Dallas goes on the power play after the TV time out.
9:15 - Dallas 0/2 on the power play.
8:55 - The studio guys at Versus made an octopus joke. Bra-vo.
8:27 - Zubov with a shot that Osgood snags with his glove hand and holds for a faceoff.
8:09 - This is far too early to discuss, but if you consider Conn Smythe, you know Osgood wouldn’t be considered, but he’s just as important as Franzen.
7:23 - Penalty’s over.
6:09 - Two great chances for Chris Chelios, and they don’t get through to Turco.
5:37 - Shots are 22-10 Detroit.
5:30 - Final TV time out.
4:36 - Osgood stops a bouncing puck from center ice and holds it. Here’s a question: is it a good thing that the Wings have all three goals from the power play? Or is it like watching the Lions leading off two defensive TDs?
4:23 - GOAL DETROIT: Fillpula (3) from Samuelsson and Kronwall. Okay, well, never mind that question. Kronwall passes up to Samuelsson, who passes up to Filppula, who puts it past Turco. It took no more than four seconds from one end of the ice to another. 4-0 Detroit, and this could get ugly.
3:41 - Dallas is struggling to get things together. They’re finally putting some effort on Detroit.
2:55 - Drake with a great block. Osgood with a couple diving saves! The OZ-ZIE! OZ-ZIE! chant goes up.
1:38 - Helm has been playing hard against the boards versus a couple of Stars. Good physical effort.
1:07 - GOAL DALLAS: Morrow (8) from Ott. Osgood makes a save off Ott, but doesn’t hold on, and Morrow puts it away. 4-1 Detroit.
:10 - Datsuyk and Holmstrom collided in front of Turco, and neither got the shot off. Turco quickly covers up.
:00 - End of Period 2: Shots are 25-15 Detroit (13-11 in the period). We quickly move to the final period.
20:00 - Start of Period 3: Let’s see if Dallas can put something together in this period to keep it respectable.
19:11 - FWIW: it’s 10:48, so I’ve gotten through the first two periods (1 hour 50 minutes) in 1:18.
18:25 - Rafalski turns the puck over behind Osgood, but the Stars can’t take advantage of it.
17:56 - Penalty Detroit: Zetterberg (High Sticking). He got his stick up in Morrow’s face, but fortunately didn’t draw blood, so it’s just two minutes. Dallas 0/3 on the power play.
17:25 - Sloppy play by the Stars draws an offside as they try to set up. They’re heads aren’t into it.
17:07 - Emrick brings up the 4-OT game one more time. It’s tough to give up your story line, isn’t it, Mike?
16:09 - Cleary gets a nice hit against the boards on Robidas.
15:55 - Another Kronwall hit as the penalty expires.
15:15 - Fillipas set up Chelios, and Chris’s shot goes up high.
14:50 - Helm got a hit from Turco, maybe a high stick, but play continues. It’s getting chippy.
14:09 - Reintennen runs into Stuart open ice to the front left of Osgood.
13:06 - We hit the first TV time out.
12:30 - If this lead holds up, the Stars are going to have to go back to the drawing board quickly. I’m sure they’ll be happy that it’s a 7:00 start instead of, say, 3:00 or 1:00 for NBC.
10:43 - The Wings turn the puck over in the Dallas zone, and Dallas tries to press. The shots are 27-18 Detroit.
9:43 - Robbidah with a shot that Osgood handles nicely. The Wings are short a stick, so players keep handing off a stick to stick. We hit the second TV time out.
9:31 - I never thought I would long for Gary Thorne, until I heard Mike Emrick.
8:15 - Rafalski sets up Holmstrom, who drives the net, but Turco pushes it away.
5:40 - Zetterberg had a great chance that deflects off Turco, stops behind him, and Turco has to have a teammate push it under him. The final TV time out arrives.
4:43 - Zetterberg’s shot is held by Turco. Both teams seem intent on running out the clock.
3:56 - Datsuyk tries the fancy pass to himself, but he loses the puck in the process.
2:23 - One thing you can say: this has been a workmanlike effort by the Wings tonight.
:45 - Chelios and Ott are in the corner, and they’re holding each other in a loving, caring manner. Ott had a great chance, but he posted it.
:41 - Penalty Dallas: Winchester (Slashing).
:30 - Penalty Dallas: Ott (Holding).
:00 - End of Period 3: That’s your ballgame, and a great job by Osgood. The Wings go up 1-0 in the series. Shots finish 31-21 Detroit.
It’s 11:17, so it took 1:47 to go through a game that took 2:23. Not too shabby.
I’m off. Thanks as usual to Christy for the space, and you for reading. I will see you back here Saturday night.
