Game 6 Live Blog: Wings/Stars

The BTJ live blog will begin in 15 minutes at 8pm.

First Period

20:00 - Lilja is in for Chris Chelios, who is out with an injured leg. If that doesn’t raise your blood pressure as a Wings fan, I’m not sure what will.

16:50 - Wings already have four shots on goal and have looked decent thus far.

16:14 - Kris Draper goes hard to the net and the puck bounces off of his body and under Marty Turco. It looks like the puck may have hit Draper in the face. Draper left the ice and headed straight to the locker room with some kind of facial injury. I’m pretty sure Draper will take a facial injury for a goal. Dallas Drake and Brad Stuart were given the assists.

The team that scores first in each of the five games this series has gone on to win the game. This goal along with the solid play thus far is a great sign for Detroit fans!

13:46 - Osgood just gave up a juicy rebound on a Grossman shot. Thank goodness the Stars were unable to capitalize on that!

11:33 - Huge save by Chris Osgood on a 2-on-1 Stars advantage.

11:16 - Detroit (Darren McCarty) gets called for a cross-checking penalty. Crap. The crowd is getting loud so hopefully the Wings can silence that with a strong penalty kill.

9:11 - Detroit finishes killing off the McCarty penalty when Datsyuk takes the puck and tries to slide into the Dallas zone along the boards. Trevor Daley gets called for hooking Datsyuk. Here’s to hoping the Wings can earn a 2-0 game lead.

8:35 - Draper is getting stitches in the locker room. He was hit by the puck in between his chin and lower lip on the first goal.

8:19 - Grossman makes a stop with his stick and Pavel Datsyuk taps in the consequential bounce to get that 2-0 lead. Yes! Holmstrom and Lidstrom were given the assists.

3:43 - Dallas Drake sets up in the crease and pops the puck in for Detroit’s third goal of the game. See, it’s all about crashing the net and making things difficult for Turco (in a legal manner). Brett Lebda and Mikael Samuelsson notched the assists. Drake now has two offensive points in the first period. And that’s what Ken Holland likes to sign the gritty veteran players because their play drastically improves come playoff time.

2:08 - Detroit’s Brad Stuart got a two minute penalty for interference.

:36.9 - Brad Winchester got his elbow up on Andreas Lilja behind the net resulting in a Dallas roughing penalty. Valtteri Filppula also got a tripping penalty.

It was around this time that Bruce Ciskie at the AOL FanHouse liveblog made this genius comment: The game is so over that Detroit is letting Lilja kill a penalty.

End of First Period: Wings 3, Stars 0
Detroit outshot Dallas, 13-6.

Second Period

17:39 - Darren McCarty gets sent to the box again for interference.

16:49 - Brenden Morrow turns over the puck over at center ice while on the power play. Henrik Zetterberg picks off the intended pass and carries the puck down the ice and dekes Turco on a breakaway for the fourth goal of the game.

13:16 - Andreas Lilja gets called for tripping.

11:16 - Dallas got no shots on their power play. Excellent.

9:56 - McCarty is going to the box. AGAIN. Another interference penalty.

6:47 - Barch of the Dallas Stars gets called for hooking.

4:50 - Huge hit on Robidas by Drake - what a game he is having!

4:14 - Kronwall heads to the box for hooking. Oops. Come on boys, let’s not give them any chance to get back in this game.

End of Second Period: Wings 4, Stars 0
Wings outshot the Stars, 9-7.

Third Period

17:33 - Robidas scores on Osgood on a slapshot. The crowd is rocking and we just need the Wings to remain composed and play disciplined hockey. We still have a three goal lead, but we can’t be dumb. We need to protect the lead while pressuring the Stars in their zone.

5:07 - Sorry for the lack of updates in the third. There hasn’t been much definitively. Plenty of back and forth with great saves by both goaltenders. And pretty much no stoppages in play either.

End of the Third Period: Wings 4, Stars 1

I will certainly take a 3-0 first period lead in Dallas. Let’s just hope that the Wings keep applying this kind of pressure and don’t let up.

    Chuckle at AOLFanhouse.

Although Lilja is an excellent penalty killer and blocks shots like a maniac. It just gets a little scary when he handles the puck, or passes it, or tries to carry it out of the zone….
