Game 3 Live Blog: Wings/Pens
BTJ live blog will begin once the puck drops. Go Wings!
First Period
FYI - There will be Joe Vision for Game #4 on Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.
18:56 - First penalty is given to Detroit. What a surprise based on Therrien’s complaints. Johan Franzen heads to the box for holding. This would be a huge goal if the Penguins could score on this power play.
16:55 - Staal gets called for roughing. Wings go on the power play just as the Wings kill off the Penguins power play. Chris Osgood had a great save during the penalty kill.
14:33 - Well, the Wings didn’t get much done on that power play. Bummer.
12:54 - Samuelsson has a nice offensive opportunity in the Pittsburgh zone. No good though.
10:01 - Wings have outshot Pittsburgh, 6-1, so far this period.
8:42 - Brad Stuart sneaks down the middle of the ice and takes a shot just outside the crease. I’m liking these opportunities.
7:53 - Another Detroit power play. This time, it’s Sergei Gonchar for hooking.
6:19 - Samuelsson takes a nice wrist shot after a quick Niklas Kronwall pass from just inside the blue line. Sammy’s shot was our best and only decent power play opportunity, but we were making quick, crisp passes and controlling the puck which is certainly a positive sign.
4:15ish - Sydor carries the puck to the net and then Hossa tries to put in a rebound, but Osgood makes the stops and then Dan Cleary picks off the puck and gets the puck away from the crease.
2:35 - The Penguins finally get on the board and who gets their goal? Crosby, of course. Brad Stuart passes the puck to Zetterberg’s skate and Hossa picks it off and passes to Crosby skating to the net. Crosby gets the puck in between Ozzie’s pads.
:41 - Rafalski was called for tripping on Evgeni Malkin. Not really how I’d like to end this period with the loud crowd and the Penguins up by one.
:01 - Wide open net and the Penguins can’t capitalize. And the horn blows. Thank goodness.
End of First Period: Wings 0, Penguins 1
Wings outshoot Pittsburgh, 9-6.
Second Period
19:40 - Crosby hits the goal post. Oh my gosh. Get it together boys. I know they are on the power play, but still.
17:58 - Kronwall gets called for hooking. I thought that was a bit weak.
17:26 - Crosby scores. I have nothing to say other than crap.
14:59 - Brad Stuart fans on his shot. This crowd is loud! It’s great to hear, but at the same time I wish we gave them a reason to quiet down.
13:35 - Great save by Ozzie on Gonchar.
11:06 - Gill heads to the box after knocking over Homer in front of the net. The Wings need to score now.
10:50 - No Franzen goal because the net was knocked over by Hudler two seconds before.
7:03 - Gill gets another cross-checking penalty on Homer in front of the net.
5:28 - The Penguins seem to be getting pissed off at Homer right about now. Haha.
5:12 - Franzen carries the puck from the blue line to just outside the crease and scores to bring the Wings within one!! Yay!
1:05 - A couple decent chances for Detroit, particularly from the Russian superstar Pavel Datsyuk.
End of First Period: Wings 1, Penguins 2
Shots are tied at 18 apiece.
Third Period
16:27 - Hossa hit the goal post on a nice wraparound. And then the next shot, Ozzie barely grabs it before the puck trickled to the goal line. Oh my goodness. Too stressful.
12:42 - Adam Hall banks in the puck off of Osgood who got way outta the net. Crap.
11:41 - How in the world did that shot not go in? That was an amazing save. They need to replay that ASAP because the net looked wide open.
8:07 - Ahh, this game is too intense. I don’t know if I’m cut out for this kind of action in terms of live blogging!
7:25 - Datsyuk just blocked a dangerous shot by Sydor from the point. What a player!
6:23 - It’s a one goal game again. The Wings win the draw and eventually the puck gets back to Samuelsson, who is along the boards above the face off circle, and he scores!!!
4:18 - Malkin heads to the box for hooking Kronner. This is huge boys- let’s get a goal!!
3:18 - We did essentially nothing in the first minute of the power play. Come on boys!
2:18 - Huge penalty kill for the Penguins.
:00 - Wings first loss in the Stanley Cup Finals.
End of Third Period: Wings 2, Penguins 3
Wings outshot Pittsburgh, 34-24.

I wish the refs would grow a pair and stop putting up with the B.S.
Oh where oh where has Paul Stewert gone?
Malkin had an awesome triple gainer over raffy.

Just as I suspected.
I figured the Penguins would win this one, by phantom power-plays if nothing else. The league can’t possibly have it’s budding dynasty swept!

Haha. So true. There have been some weak calls tonight especially. I won’t say that has cost us the game, but it has certainly helped to give the Pens momentum.

GUYS GUYS GUYS! Have you conceded the game? This kind of talk will not be tolerated? Both of you get two for positiveve thinking obstruction.

Wings need to pay attention to detail here. Better decisions, and way more better shots. 10 foot in the air aint going in.

To clarify: I don’t actually believe that there is some kind of “conspiracy” to make sure that NBC gets a weekend game or that Sidney Crosby can actually do something that will (supposedly) get the casual fan interested in hockey.
If the league had enough intelligence, competence, organizational ability, and forethought to do that, there would never have been a lockout in the first place and now all 30 teams would be healthy and profitable.
At least when Detroit is losing they can still score!

Haven’t conceded - but I expected the most likely outcome in Pittsburgh would be a split. Most teams down 2-0 when they go home come out like gangbusters in their first game - reliable pattern in pretty much any sport.
Although I was hoping that the split would involve Detroit taking the first one, and the Penguins desperately winning the fourth and wearing themselves out for game five.
I have tickets to a speaker on the evening of game six, so if they could possibly wrap up the series in five games, it would be really convenient for me.

Pens got their sticks in the way pretty good tonight. And they were the quicker team for sure, much much better game.
Detroit decided to apply the pressure the last 10 minutes maybe Saturday they can play 60.

I’m not panicked right now because I know when the Wings exerted themselves and played like they cared, they dominated the play of the game and created some great scoring chances. But like Ron said, it’s a 60 minute game. You can’t let up.

Maybe the two days off will give the boys some energy.
At least the opportunity to hoist the cup at the Joe is now there.

We all know the Wings can play better. And, I am thinking the pens were maxed out on that effort.

The good thing is…the Wings fired 16 shots on Fleury in the third. So yes they lost…but they may have gotten into a rhythm against Pittsburgh. We will see Saturday if that has some carryover.
